Four hundred years ago in 1623, the Pilgrims faced a terrible drought that threatened their lives.

From the third week of May until well into July, almost no rain fell. With their crops withering, the Pilgrims set aside "a solemn day of humiliation to seek the Lord by humble and fervent prayer."

That evening, the rains came. Governor Bradford described it as "such sweet and gentle showers as gave them cause of rejoicing and blessing God." The gentle rains revived their crops and led to a bountiful harvest. So the Pilgrims set aside time for their second Thanksgiving celebration.
