Mercy Chefs ise officially deploying here in Lee County, Alabama -- the very epicenter of the tornado strikes. Our Mercy Chefs mobile kitchen has arrived here in Lee County, along with our chefs and team. That means we will be serving meals TOMORROW -- STARTING WITH BREAKFAST!
Our team will be serving at the heart of the worst tornado damage, providing breakfast and lunch to first responders and volunteer cleanup teams. With schools out due to the storm, we expect to also be providing meals to many kids. As emergency workers and those in the community hear about Mercy Chefs, we expect the demand will grow throughout the week and into the weekend.
+ + "Monster" tornado worst since 2013
Among the dozens of tornadoes that ripped through Alabama and Georgia, Lee County was devastated by what's being called a "monster" tornado. This tornado registered wind speeds of 170 MPH (making it an E4 tornado), was a mile wide and left damage along a path of 24 miles. It is the worst tornado to hit the U.S. since 2013 (Moore, Oklahoma).
Seeing the damage firsthand confirmed everything we heard. The devastation here is widespread and tragic. So far, 23 are confirmed dead, including three children ages 10, 9, and 6. Entire families were killed. Homes obliterated. The destruction is total in some areas. It's indescribable.
+ + Two simultaneous deployments...
Mercy Chefs is working with our friends at Church of the Highlands, who have been on the scene since just one hour after the storm hit. Meanwhile, feeding continues uninterrupted on the Florida Panhandle. We have a fully-staffed mobile kitchen providing meals in Panama City where we are assisting volunteer teams who are helping with the cleanup there.
With two major deployments this week, we urgently need friends like you to partner with us. Mercy Chefs relies on the faithfulness and generosity of a relatively small band of supporters who believe in our work. Your gift TODAY will help us reach out TODAY! Go here to make your tax-deductible gift directly to Mercy Chefs as we deploy here in Alabama and continue other vital efforts.
And please pray for those who have met tragedy and are facing tremendous hardship due to this storm. People here are still digging out, trying to process what just happened and what to do next. The community is mourning while at the same time trying to sort through what remains.
Thank you and God bless you.
