We've heard so many stories of the chaos and confusion caused by the flooding. One woman who received a Mercy Chefs meal wept as she shared how she spent the entire night of the flood wondering if her family had survived.
When the rains started, her husband left their home to get her elderly parents, but phone service was cut off so she spent a harrowing night unsure of her family's fate. Thankfully, they were safe but they couldn't make it back to their home because a creek had flooded and blocked the road.
+ + Grandma and baby almost swept away...
We served a family and their neighbors who were just glad to be alive. One woman told us she was carrying her grandchild in her arms, trying to get to a vehicle, when she lost her footing in the floodwaters. Just then, a rush of current hit her and began sweeping her away when her son grabbed her and saved both her and her infant grandchild.
For many, the chaos and confusion will continue for weeks and months.
NBC News is reporting that some people here are refusing to leave their homes that have been damaged or destroyed in the flooding for fear of looters. So they stay -- perhaps without power, water, adequate shelter, or food.
These are the people Mercy Chefs is helping right now -- flood victims who are grieving or struggling to figure out where to start on the long road to recovery.
