Our hearts are heavy as we grieve for the families impacted by the tragic shooting in Virginia Beach, just a few miles from our Mercy Chefs home office. Mercy Chefs will do whatever we can to be part of the healing in our local community as we continue to answer the calls for help from across the country.
Today here in Beavercreek,
our team recently finished serving our first meal -- lunch to volunteers who are helping with the extensive cleanup effort. No matter how many times I see the devastation left behind by these massive storms, it is always sobering. Houses leveled. Trees uprooted and mangled. Buildings destroyed. Whole neighborhoods devastated.
+ + Tornado more than 2/3 mile wide...
The National Weather Service is releasing more information on the tornadoes as they survey the storm damage. The storm that hit Beavercreek was more than two-thirds of a mile wide and stayed on the ground for 10 miles. Another tornado in the "swarm" that hit this region was more than a half-mile wide and left a 19-mile path of destruction.
My team did an amazing job today getting set up and serving our first meals basically within 24 hours of our arrival. Dinner prep is already well under way, and tomorrow we will again serve lunch and dinner.
