Today is DAY NINE of Mercy Chefs providing hot meals, fresh produce and vital supplies to Hurricane Dorian evacuees here in the Bahamas, and the need isn't letting up.
In fact, hundreds of evacuees are still arriving every day, putting even more strain on the over-capacity shelters as well as the locals who are opening their homes to the evacuees. Today, we're adding two new churches as partners in our distribution network, which has been the key in getting hot meals to the families who are taking in five, ten or more hurricane victims. Just about everyone here is taking in evacuees.
+ + How we're partnering to meet the need...
That's why I'm so grateful that Mercy Chefs can come alongside and take a little bit of the burden off of these families who have seen the number of people under their roof double. In addition to meals, our church network is providing critical goods like toilet paper, diapers, formula, and other essentials.
But as I noted, the need is only increasing as more evacuees come. That's why my team is thrilled that the tilt skillet will be arriving TOMORROW -- giving us the capacity to serve more meals more effectively.
We'll serve about 2,000 meals for dinner tonight, and with the new equipment in place, we'll reach even more hurricane victims in the coming 48 hours. But to do so, we need the help of friends like you THIS WEEK to make these life-giving meals happen! Can I count on your help as we serve thousands more meals this week to hurricane disaster victims who have literally lost everything? As I noted, this need is not going away any time soon! It will be months before permanent housing can be established for these many evacuees. Mercy Chefs is committed to being part of the long-term solution here, but that means we need friends like you to continue to stand with us.
Tomorrow, I'm headed to Grand Bahama Island -- one of the epicenters of the hurricane's strike. We have been asked by the government here to step up and fill a critical need that can bring relief to thousands on the front-lines of the storm devastation. I'll be sharing more with you about this amazing opportunity, but for today, I need your help to ensure that we can reach every hurricane evacuee within our reach with a hot meal, fresh produce, and vital resources.
Thank you so much for standing with Mercy Chefs, and God bless you!
Gary LeBlanc, Mercy Chefs
P.S. The volunteer and church network that we have established here is doing an amazing job of getting Mercy Chefs' hot meals to those most urgently in need. This is what we do: we come into a situation and ask, "What's the need? How can we help?" When we realized that a key area of need was helping the families who are taking in 5, 10 or more evacuees, we worked to get a system in place to reach these families. And it all starts with the generous support of friends like you. Your gifts make it possible for us to meet this need! We'll serve thousands of meals this week. Go here to help:
