On Monday, I received a phone call that led to a Zoom call with "Sister Norma" -- a precious woman who is working on the very frontlines of an escalating human disaster that's taking place right here in America.
I'm talking about the upheaval that is causing thousands of people to come to our borders right now. Mercy Chefs' partners work in McAllen, Texas -- right on the U.S.-Mexico border. They operate a respite station for those who are being processed through our legal immigration channels, providing basic necessities and, most importantly, food.
+ + A human crisis...
What's happening in D.C. to cause this is above my pay grade. The border crisis needs to be sorted out. But right now, we have a human crisis that is getting worse by the day.
A few weeks ago, U.S. Border Patrol was seeing perhaps a few dozen people at a crossing point daily. Now, the numbers are 2,000, 3,000 or even 4,000 daily. This is creating a very real crisis for our partners on the border.
They simply do not have enough food to provide these people a decent meal as they come through her respite center.
Mercy Chefs' partners are doing the best they can, but they simply cannot keep up with the need. It breaks my heart. As we spoke on the call, I was faced with a very real human crisis -- hurting people by the thousands need help. I could hear Jesus' words echoing in my mind...
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink." (Matthew 25:35)
So I made a decision yesterday to deploy a Mercy Chefs team to McAllen to help our partners feed those who are caught in the crossfire of our border crisis.
+ + Thousands need help...
Most of the people we'll be helping are moms with children, or entire family units. They are being processed at the border. They may be turned away. But right now, as they are coming through the respite station, they need practical help.
On Friday, we'll have Mercy Chefs' team members on the ground in McAllen. We are planning on serving our first meals by Saturday -- about 1,000 meals a day at first, but as word spreads, I'm expecting that number could double or triple.
Simply put, I need help to make this happen.

Before Monday, we had no plans to send a team to McAllen that will be the equivalent of a full deployment during a hurricane or tornado. But when presented with an urgent need, I must use the resources God has given us to go and feed people!
