There is damage and destruction everywhere here in Lee County. In one community, five apartment buildings have been condemned, leaving all the residents homeless. One man we spoke with, pointing to a nearby vehicle, told us his home was "that truck, and it's not even my truck."
There are so many people here who have been displaced and suddenly find themselves homeless. And that's after they survived the harrowing hours of Hurricane Ian's landfall.
+ + Woman barely survives...
A woman who received a meal you provided (pictured here with my wife, Ann) shared her nightmare story of when the storm struck. She was trapped in her home as the waters rose. Before she could even respond, the water was up to her neck and she had about six inches of air to breathe. Amazingly (miraculously), she survived. But now she faces a long road of recovery as she tries to salvage something of her belongings. On top of all this, her skin is badly blistered from the sun. Still, she is determined: "I have nowhere else to go," she tells us.
Today, we have blown past 70,000 meals served and our team is still working on getting thousands of meals for dinner distributed to those in need.
This is the largest deployment in Mercy Chefs' history, and we need the largest response we've ever seen from friends across the country.
